MHPC's Support Groups

00:00:00 Speaker 1

Welcome to Independent Perspective, a public affairs presentation of Western New York Independent Living (WNYIL). Our guest today is Cathie Campbell, assistant director of Mental Health PEER Connection (MHPC), and I'm your host, Ernie Churchwell. Welcome to the program, Cathie.

00:00:16 Speaker 2

Thank you for having me.

00:00:18 Speaker 1

It's our pleasure. You are the person who has at her fingertip’s details of the various and sundry support groups that have grown up with MHPC over the years.

00:00:32 Speaker 1

Some of them at the agency, some of them in the community. Chances are we'll probably won't be able to fit everything into this show, but hey, that's why we've got a separate one each week. Alright, what can you tell us first about the reason for these support groups?

00:00:49 Speaker 2

Well, they're part of our work support, benefits advisement and life coaching program, and they helped to foster the skills that one would develop when working with a life coach, works, support or benefits advisement peers.

00:01:09 Speaker 1

Terrific. To show people just what we're talking about, could you give some details on some groups?

00:01:17 Speaker 2

Well, we have three virtual support groups. The first one is “I Believe in You!” And that is every second and fourth Thursday, 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.

00:01:29 Speaker 2

And you get some support on your self-esteem, your wellness, worth and acceptance. And then our second virtual support group is “Open Mic: Freedom of Expression” for people who freely want to express themselves through spoken word, singing, playing musical instruments, theater, dance, comedy and that is the first and third Thursdays from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

00:02:03 Speaker 2

Our last virtual support group is our “PEER 2 PEER” Want to become a Certified Peer? And it's the third Wednesday of every month from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.

00:02:15 Speaker 2

And it helps you learn how to go through the process of becoming a certified peer specialist.

00:02:22 Speaker 1

And since these are virtual support group, I presume that people will have to register in advance in order to get the Zoom links so that they can participate. And while we're at it, can you mention who facilitates each of these groups?

00:02:37 Speaker 2

Denise Munir is the one who facilitates “I Believe in You!” and “Open Mic” and she can be reached at 836-0822, ext. 169.

00:02:52 Speaker 2

Christascha Knight is the one who oversees our becoming a Certified Peer Specialist support group, and she can be reached at 602-7014. And that's her work cell phone number.

00:03:08 Speaker 1

And of course, we're just barely scratching the surface because there are so many support groups. What else can you tell us?

00:03:16 Speaker 2

Well, we have our “Hoarding 2 Healing” support group that runs every Monday from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m.

00:03:23 Speaker 2

They can contact Annie O'Neil at 259-3379 to RSVP, and that's out here at 3108 Main. Our “Boarding the Vocational Train”, also held here at 3108 Main is the first and third Thursdays from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m., and they would contact Christascha Knight again, that's at 602-7014.

00:03:51 Speaker 1

Alrighty. And let's see, we're actually down to less than a minute of the show left. Is there anything of an overall nature that you could pass along before we wrap up for today?

00:04:05 Speaker 2

Well, the next three support groups I have are all for our life coaching consumers.

00:04:11 Speaker 2

And we have one on peer support and wellness, one on housing barriers and another one on socialization barriers. They're all held here at 3108 Main, and they can contact me Cathie Campbell at 836-0822 ext. 139 and I could link them with the various peers that they could call for those.

00:04:40 Speaker 1

That's terrific. We're out of time. Thank you so much and we'll look forward to having you back for more groups next meeting. You've been listening to Independent Perspective, a public affairs presentation of WNYIL. Our guest today was Cathie Campbell, assistant director of MHPC. And I've been your host, Ernie Churchwell.
