Today marks a unique and powerful intersection of observances that closely align with our core mission at Western New York Independent Living. As an organization built on advocacy, independence, and inclusion, today we kick off and celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month, Deaf Access Month, and Service Dog Month.
Each of these recognitions highlights the vital intersections of culture, accessibility, and independence within our Western New York Community:
- National Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept 15 – Oct 15): Today we begin honoring the rich histories, diverse cultures, and invaluable contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. In our region, we celebrate the community champions and advocates who continually push for equity, cultural representation, and systemic change.
- Deaf Access Month: This month reinforces our commitment to breaking down communication barriers. True independent living means ensuring seamless access to information, technology, and services for Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Deaf Blind individuals through inclusive design, assistive technology, and American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation.
- Service Dog Month: This month we also honor the incredible highly trained service dogs that break down barriers alongside their human partner every day. From providing vital mobility support to offering life-saving medial alerts, these dogs are not companions but working animals; essential partners in helping people with disabilities live life entirely on their own terms.
